Creative Therapeutic Approaches

How it works

Creative Therapeutic Approaches offer children a gentle, non‑directive way to explore feelings through drawing, story, metaphor, sensory play and symbolic expression. These approaches are grounded in trauma‑informed, attachment‑based practice, providing emotional safety, predictability and attuned relational support.

This includes:

  • 1:1 Drawing & Talking 12‑week therapeutic programme

  • Group Drawing & Talking 6 or 8‑week programme

  • Class Drawing & Talking-whole‑class delivery

  • Sandplay-sensory, symbolic therapeutic work using miniature worlds

  • Creative, sensory and symbolic emotional work tailored to individual needs

  • Children use drawing, sand or symbolic objects in a calm, non‑directive way, with the adult following their lead and offering steady, attuned presence. This gentle structure supports emotional processing without pressure to talk.

  • After each session, it’s helpful for pupils to spend a few minutes with a trusted member of staff to transition back into the school day feeling settled and supported.

Who benefits?

Creative Therapeutic Approaches are particularly helpful for pupils who:

  • struggle to verbalise feelings or find talking‑based work too intense

  • are anxious, withdrawn or overwhelmed by direct emotional conversations

  • have experienced trauma, loss, change or ongoing stress

  • need a calm, predictable space to process emotions safely

  • benefit from sensory, visual or symbolic ways of expressing themselves

  • are neurodivergent and require low‑demand, attuned relational support

Sandplay is especially supportive of children who benefit from additional support, offering a sensory, symbolic and deeply grounding way to explore feelings without verbal or drawing pressure.

Group and class Drawing & Talking provides a gentle first step for children who may benefit from 1:1 work but aren’t yet ready for the intensity of individual sessions. The group setting builds relational safety and trust, helping pupils feel more comfortable exploring feelings alongside others before moving into deeper 1:1 support if needed.

Why choose Creative Therapeutic Approaches?

Gentle, non‑directive emotional processing
Children express feelings symbolically through drawing, story, sand or metaphor without pressure to talk.

Grounded in trauma‑informed practice
Safety, predictability and attunement underpin every session.

Ideal for children who find direct work overwhelming
Creative methods reduce intensity while still enabling meaningful emotional growth.

Supports children who benefit from adapted or attuned approaches
Sensory, visual and symbolic methods meet a wide range of emotional and communication needs.

Outcomes

  • Increased emotional expression through creative media

  • Improved regulation and reduced overwhelm

  • Greater sense of safety and relational trust

  • Insight to inform SENCO and pastoral planning
